Why Chess?

Big benefits for little minds

Chess is one of the best things a primary-school-aged child can do for their growing brain. It builds real, lasting skills like concentration, planning, patience and resilience, all through a game they genuinely love. No screens, just thinking and plenty of fun.

🧠

Problem Solving

Kids learn to think ahead, plan their moves and find creative solutions, skills that carry straight into the classroom.

🎯

Focus & Patience

Chess gently builds concentration and the ability to sit with a tricky problem instead of giving up.

😄

Confidence & Fun

Every child gets celebrated for their progress. Games, puzzles and mini-challenges keep the giggles coming.

📵

Screen-Free Focus

A rewarding challenge away from devices, where kids stay absorbed for a whole hour and barely notice they're learning.

Your Child's First Week Is Free

Momentum Chess runs weekly weekend children's chess classes for families across south-east Melbourne. Over 70 kids have come along so far. Come try your first week free, and if your child loves it, it's just $25 per lesson after that.

The Program

What your child will learn

Every child works at their own level: brand-new players learn the moves from scratch, while stronger players sharpen tactics, strategy and confidence so they win more games.

Step 1

Start Strong

Opening principles that win games: control the centre, develop your pieces, keep your king safe, plus special moves like castling.

Step 2

Tactics Toolbox

Forks, pins, skewers and discovered attacks: spotting free pieces and setting sneaky traps through fun puzzles.

Step 3

Finish the Job

Checkmate patterns every player should know, converting a winning position, and avoiding the dreaded stalemate.

Step 4

Game Day

A fun mini-tournament to put it all into practice, learning from each game, and a certificate for every player.

What a Sunday class actually looks like

Each hour follows the same friendly rhythm: a warm-up puzzle on the demo board as kids arrive, a short focused lesson on one idea (a tactic, an opening principle, a checkmate pattern), then the part they love most — guided games against other kids at their level, with the coach circling to point out better moves in the moment. We finish with a quick wrap-up so every child leaves knowing one thing they do better than last week. It's a proper junior chess club feel: small groups, zero screens, lots of laughing, and real progress you can see within a few weeks.

FAQ

Questions parents ask

My child has never played chess. Can they still join?
Absolutely. Every level is welcome, including complete beginners. We run a dedicated class for kids still learning the rules, plus separate beginner and intermediate groups, so your child always learns alongside kids at their level.
How much do the classes cost?
Two options after your free trial. Pay casually at $31 per class and come whenever suits, with no commitment. Or enrol for the term at the lower $25 per class and pay it off in easy weekly installments. No membership fees either way, and Term 3 starts Sunday 26 July 2026.
What ages are the classes for?
Kids aged roughly 5-12 (Prep to Grade 6) are the core of the program, and older kids are welcome too — several high schoolers play in our Intermediate group. Groups are organised by chess level, not just age, so every child plays with kids at their standard.
Can my child join partway through?
Yes. Kids can join any Sunday. You can pay casually at $31 per class, or join the term plan at $25 per class for the weeks that remain. The first class is always a free trial. Just book a trial and we'll confirm their group and time within a day.
Where do I park and drop off?
There's street parking on and around Livingston St in Highett. Classes are drop-off, so you're welcome to leave once your child is settled and come back at pick-up time.
How big are the classes?
Groups are kept small — around ten kids per class — so every child gets real attention from the coach. Over 70 kids across our level-based groups have come along so far.
Is this a short course or ongoing weekly classes?
Ongoing weekly classes. You can pay casually at $31 per class, or enrol for the term at $25 per class paid weekly in installments. Kids can join any Sunday. Every few weeks we cap things off with a fun mini-tournament and a certificate for every player.
Where and when are the classes?
Classes run on Sunday afternoons at 2 Livingston St, Highett, in Melbourne's south-east. Term 3 starts Sunday 26 July 2026. Your child's class time depends on their level, see the Class Times section above.
What does my child need to bring?
Just themselves! All chess boards and pieces are provided. A water bottle is always a good idea.
Do parents stay during class?
Classes are drop-off: parents don't stay during the session, which helps the kids settle in and focus. Just drop your child off at 2 Livingston St, Highett at the start and pick them up promptly at the end.
